Frequently
Asked Questions
What does EER mean?
EER is the Energy Efficiency Ratio, which is determined by U.S. Government
standards and tests. The higher the EER number, the more energy-efficient
the unit. According to Federal laws, all air conditioners must have the
EER listed on a bright yellow tag attached to every unit. All air
conditioners feature an EER of 8.0 or higher. The EER of a unit is
calculated by dividing the number of BTU’s the unit is rated for, by the
number of watts the unit uses.
What is a BTU?
A BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is the amount of heat it takes to raise
the temperature of 1 pound of water 1 degree Fahrenheit. BTUs are used to
rate air conditioners in order to help determine the correct application
for your needs.
How important is room size
when deciding what air conditioner is right for me?
Too large a unit will cause your air conditioner to "short
cycle", shutting off before removing the humidity from the air. Too
small a unit will run continuously and never achieve maximum efficiency.
What is the proper setting
to cool my room?
For correct cooling operation follow these simple steps:
- Close Air Exchanger, if provided.
- Turn the thermostat to the maximum.
- Turn master control to "HI COOL".
- If the room becomes too cool for comfort, turn the thermostat
counterclockwise until the compressor turns off. The air-circulating
fan will remain in operation.
- When the desired comfort level is reached, the Master Control may be
turned to a lower setting.
Caution: If the air conditioner is shut off, wait a minimum of three
minutes before restarting.
How can I help my unit work
at peak efficiency?
- Close fireplace dampers, windows and doors. Seal the opening to the
attic or other un-cooled areas.
- Install awnings, keep shades and curtains closed to keep out the
heat and sunlight.
- Install the air conditioner where its exterior parts will be shaded.
- Insulate, particularly the attic floor. Have the attic well
ventilated.
- Use storms windows and doors or insulated glass. Weather-strip the
doors and windows.
- Use a higher (warmer) thermostat setting during peak periods or when
the area is not occupied.
- Don’t let heat build up all-day and then try to cool areas
quickly. Start the unit earlier in the day and cool areas slowly
before they become occupied.
- Avoid activities such as baking and the operation of a self-cleaning
oven while using your air conditioner during the high heat times of
the day.
- Do not block the back or the outside of the unit.
- Change or clean the filter regularly. Check the airflow for blockage
by outside obstructions.
- Take care of the unit by having it checked and cleaned by a
qualified technician at the start of every season.
How often should I clean my
filter?
Clean your filter every two weeks in most environments. If there are
smokers or heavy cooking present, once a week would be advised.
- Turn the Master Control off.
- On most units, lift up on the two filter tabs at the top of the
decorative front panel. The hanging filter should slide out easily. On
some units the decorative front panel may need to be removed with a
screwdriver. Please check your owner’s manual for the model you have
purchased.
- Carefully wash the filter with warm water and mild detergent. Rinse
with clear water, allow to dry and replace.
- Replace filter in decorative front.
- Return Master Control to desired operation.
What are som e installation
hints?
- Carefully follow the instructions in the Owner’s Manual.
- Be sure the cabinet maintains an outward pitch. The air conditioner
should slant downward on the outside by ½ a bubble on a carpenter’s
level.
- Use all the hardware included with the installation kit to insure a
secure installation.
